2021 RELEASES

This month we've focused on 2021 releases: Ridley Scott, Wes Anderson, Joel Coen and more. We've also added a few movies from the 1980's to 2010’s.

The Last Duel - 2021

Set in medieval France, The Last Duel recounts the judicial duel between knight Jean de Carrouges (Matt Damon) and squire Jacques Le Gris (Adam Driver), who is accused of raping Jean's wife Marguerite (Jodie Comer). The film is told in flashback format divided into three different chapters. Impressive combat scenes like in Gladiator, both cold and soft shots in a blue palette reminiscent of that of Kingdom of Heaven, medieval costumes, diffuse light…: if you want to see an impressive medieval epic with a Ridley Scott touch, take a look at our screencaps.

If you are looking for images of a caravan traveling alone through post-apocalyptic cities in the style of Western films or through the desert under a cloudy sky, under an aurora, etc., check out our images of Finch, a 2021 American film directed by Miguel Sapochnik. In a post-apocalyptic world, Finch (Tom Hanks), a former robotics engineer who is one of the only survivors, works to develop a robot to take care of his dog after he dies. The three embark on a long journey to the West, during which Finch tries to teach his creation about love, friendship and what it means to be human.

The Electrical Life of Louis Wain - 2021

Now let's play with our database by typing cat in the search field: distinguished cat, electrical cat, still life with a cat, cats having a drink…: this is the story of Louis William Wain (1860 – 1939), an English painter known for his anthropomorphized large-eyed cats and kittens. The film, directed by Will Sharpe, tells the life of this eccentric artist (Benedict Cumberbatch), from the recognition of his talent in the Victorian era to his incarceration in a mental health hospital.

The French Dispatch - 2021

The French Dispatch by Wes Anderson is set in a fictional French town in a time reminiscent of the 1950s and 60s. It is an anthology of stories from the last issue of the American magazine The French Dispatch, after its editor Arthur Howitzer Jr. died of a heart attack.

The film was shot on 35mm film for both the color and for the black-and-white sequences. It was acclaimed for its cinematography, its visual richness, its many cinephile references, from Tati to Fellini, and of course for Wes Anderson's sophisticated, artificial, burlesque and romantic touch.

The Tragedy of Macbeth - 2021

It is the first film Joel Coen directed without his brother's involvement. The film is based on the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare: in 11th century Scotland, three witches (Kathryn Hunter) predict to Macbeth (Denzel Washington) that he will become king. He and his ambitious wife (Frances McDormand) devise a plan to seize the throne. The Tragedy of Macbeth was shot in black-and-white with an aspect ratio of 1.19:1. These particular features, as well as some angles and framings, are reminiscent of German Expressionists such as F. W. Murnau and Fritz Lang. It was nominated for the 2021 Academy Award for Best Cinematography and Best Production Design - both of which Dune won.

TV sets, garden parties, villas, hairstyles and make-ups (the film received many awards for this!)…: biographical drama, The Eyes of Tammy Faye by Michael Showalter is a rich catalog of images of 1970s and 1980s America. It tells the story of American television personality Tammy Faye Bakker (Jessica Chastain) and her husband Jim Bakker (Andrew Garfield), who founded the largest evangelical television channel in the 1970’s: the PTL Satellite Network, with their flagship show The PTL Club. While Tammy Faye Bakker becomes an iconic televangelist, her rise is threatened by Jim's handling of PTL's finances.
