It's Time for June's New stills!
Movies, TV series, music videos and anime screencaps from all eras, from all over the world and from all genres: this month we added over 26,000 stills from 106 titles to our database. Here are images of some of these new works, and a few lines about the ones we love the most.
We have in particular made a very special images selection for you about some oldies oddities. We leave it up to you to discover them and hope you will love them as much as we do.
As usual, if you want to know all our news, you can find the list at the end of each category.
MOVIES
The Fall - 2006
Let us start with The Fall by Tarsem Singh. Alexandria, a Romanian-born little girl, meets a stuntman in a Los Angeles hospital on the outskirts of the 1920s, who begins to tell her the story of five heroes and their enemy, Governor Odious. As the stuntman continues to tell his epic story and the little girl imagines it, the line between fiction and reality becomes increasingly blurred.
This is the film we are collecting the most images this month! 764, to be exact. Why is that? Let us take a look at some screenshots: orange sand dunes, disturbing angles, desolate deserts, lost oases, ancient ruins... As you can see, the movie was shot all over the world, especially in India, but also in Italy, Argentina, Turkey, Namibia and other countries. The costumes are also really amazing. They were designed by Eiko Ishioka, who is known for her work on Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula, which is available in our database with many new screenshots.
So if you are looking for eclectic iconography and like a disturbing aesthetic in the style of Alejandro Jodorowsky, check out our stills. We recommend that you use the "Find Similar" feature on the images you like: you will make very interesting discoveries and iconographic comparisons.
Black Narcissus - 1947
Black Narcissus is the tenth film of this British film-making partnership and is still praised for its technical mastery and its esthetic and symbolic use of color. It tells the story of a group of Anglican nuns who are sent to the top of an isolated mountain in India. There they have to establish a convent, dispensary and school in the old palace of an Indian General who used it as a harem. As the five nuns try to accomplish their mission, the atmosphere of the palace, decorated with ancient Indian erotic paintings, and their relationships with the locals confuse the nuns.
Black Narcissus is still considered as a step in Technicolor history. Beyond the intense and dazzling aesthetic of the shots, colors reflect the erotic tension of the characters: they are used as a means to express the intimate feelings of the nuns. The film was shot almost entirely in studio, with matte paintings and large-scale landscapes painted on glass to suggest the vertiginous mountains of the Himalayas. And in a way, the artificial aspect of the colors and of the backdrops underlines the dramatic aspect of these characters who try in vain to suppress their desires through their missions and beliefs.
The Tales of Hoffmann - 1951
The Tales of Hoffmann, adapted from Jacques Offenbach's 1881 opera and the three short stories by E. T. A. Hoffmann. This is the second film in which Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger explore ballet after The Red Shoes released in 1948.
The Tales of Hoffmann is considered an achievement of what Michael Powell called a "composed film", that is, a movie where opera, ballet and cinema are perfectly united, and in which the music in some way precedes/dominates the images. The opera was indeed pre-recorded, and the movie was then shot and edited to the rhythm of the opera.
The film was also shot in Technicolor and as with Black Narcissus, colors were used as themes and symbols. Each of the three stories is indeed associated with a primary color: yellow for the first, red and dark tones for the second, shades of blue and gray for the third.
Curated selection: oldies oddities
Mermaid Legend by Japanese Toshiharu Ikeda, three movies by Japanese Shūji Terayama (Throw Away Your Books, Rally in the Streets, Pastoral: To Die in the Country, Farewell to the Ark) and Valerie and Her Week of Wonders by Czechoslovakian Jaromil Jires: here are some oddities from the 60’s to the 80s we just added. These movies were made by very directors but they all have that totally insane, subversive and disturbing aura of those years. So here is our curated selection of the month.
