From the 30's with King of Jazz, a musical directed by theater director John Murray Anderson, that showcases impressive visuals for its time, including early use of Technicolor, to Science fiction classics like Alien Predator, RoboCop 2 and Dark City that feature dystopian themes: discover movies that took a big part in the growth of cinematography throughout the 20th century.
Focus on The Fabulous Baron Munchausen
The Fabulous Baron Munchausen is a 1961 fantasy-comedy film directed by Karel Zeman. The movie is known for its innovative visual effects, which combine live-action footage with hand-drawn animation and cut-out puppets to create a whimsical and surreal atmosphere. The colorful and intricate visuals are reminiscent of old-fashioned illustrations and add to the film's overall charm and playfulness. Karel Zeman, the director of the film, was a pioneer in the use of special effects in cinema, and The Fabulous Baron Munchausen is considered one of his masterpieces. The film's visuals are heavily inspired by 19th-century illustrations and engravings, particularly those of Gustave Doré, who illustrated many classic works of literature such as "The Divine Comedy" and "Don Quixote". Zeman recreated the look and feel of these illustrations by using a special technique known as "trick photography", which involves combining live-action footage with miniature models and painted backgrounds.
