The Kingdom of the Fairies
The Kingdom of the Fairies marks Georges Méliès' return to complex and elaborate filmmaking. It is a visually extravagant festival in which he reaches the pinnacle of his imagination. Méliès filmed a part of this sequence through an aquarium, creating a surreal atmosphere with the tranquil swimming fish. He himself conceived and realized the set designs, which contribute to his distinctive style. The images were hand-painted at the coloring workshop led by Madame Thuillier, a former colorist for magic lantern plates. These delicate colors enhance the unreal and fantastical aspect of this tale.
